Burlington, Vermont, boasts a rich and diverse sports culture that unites the community through various athletic endeavors. From high school competitions to community leagues, sports play a pivotal role in fostering camaraderie and local pride.

High School Athletics

Burlington High School (BHS) offers a comprehensive athletics program encompassing 16 boys’ and girls’ varsity sports. The school’s mission emphasizes creating a positive environment where academic and athletic integrity, responsibility, and excellence thrive. Student-athletes are encouraged to demonstrate perseverance, dedication to their teams, good sportsmanship, and respect for all.

Notably, the BHS girls’ basketball team clinched the Division I state championship on March 15, 2025, defeating top-seeded St. Johnsbury Academy 55-33 at Patrick Gym. This victory marked Burlington’s first state title since 1976, ending a 49-year championship drought.

In addition to traditional sports, BHS has expanded its offerings to include unique activities such as longboat racing, also known as Cornish pilot gig racing. This sport provides students with opportunities to engage in team-building and physical fitness in a distinctive setting.

Community Sports

Burlington’s commitment to athletics extends beyond the high school level. The city is home to the Vermont Lake Monsters, a collegiate summer baseball team competing in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. The team plays its home games at Centennial Field, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy baseball in a family-friendly environment.

For soccer enthusiasts, Vermont Green FC represents Burlington in USL League Two, providing a platform for aspiring soccer players and engaging the community through the sport.

Additionally, the University of Vermont Catamounts participate in various NCAA Division I sports, including hockey, basketball, and soccer. Their games, held at venues like Gutterson Fieldhouse, attract significant local support and contribute to Burlington’s vibrant sports culture.
